Castle Lodge
Lodge number: 1436
Established (Warrant): 1873
Castle Lodge originally called Sandgate Lodge was formed in April 1837, Sandgate has been its home ever since. It first met in the Royal Kent Hotel in the High Street, a building that no longer exists. It moved to 80 High Street to a room above what was believed to be stables for the Royal Kent Hotel for a short period before moving to its present home 4 Gough Road. Members of the Lodge purchased what was referred to as Gough House or the Soldiers Home in 1926 which they have owned and remained in ever since. It has enjoyed a long and rich history, its members raising considerable sums of money for charity over its lifetime.
Historically it had a strong relationship with the British Army and for some time was regarded as a semi military Lodge. This was due to the number of servicemen who made up its membership during the 19th and 20th century, many from overseas, some who sadly lost their life during WW1. Over the years its membership has included such local notaries as Sir Edward Sassoon MP, Baron W Cornwallis, G Gurr and J Clark both Mayors of Folkestone and Russel Wakefield who went on to become Bishop of Birmingham.
The Lodge continues to thrive and looks forward to celebrating its 150th year anniversary in 2023. Today it draws its membership of people from various backgrounds and professions, including technology, business administration, local businesses and retired businessmen, police officers and members of the armed forces.
